Every year, nearly 63 million Indians are pushed into poverty due to the catastrophic costs of healthcare. The Below Poverty Line (BPL) population and low-income households are particularly at risk from these serious health challenges and the resulting poverty. This pressing issue has drawn significant attention from the government, aimed at finding a solution.

The Assam Atal Amrit Abhiyan: A Vital Initiative

To address the healthcare challenges faced by the BPL population and low-income households in Assam, the Government of Assam has launched a crucial health assurance scheme known as the “Atal Amrit Abhiyan.” This initiative primarily focuses on providing cashless treatment and coverage for critical care, specifically designed for those in dire need. The Atal Amrit Abhiyan aims to make medical treatment more affordable and alleviate the financial strain that families often experience due to out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

Key Features of the Atal Amrit Abhiyan Scheme

1) The scheme is being effectively implemented through an Implementation Support Agency (ISA) called Medi Assist Insurance TPA Pvt. Ltd., which has been entrusted with managing this initiative.

2) The scheme is inclusive of all BPL families and also welcomes Above Poverty Line (APL) families in the state with an annual income of up to Rs. 5 lakh. However, families of government employees do not qualify for this scheme.

3) Each adult member of eligible families will be enrolled through the ISA and will receive a laminated ID card that features a unique identification number. This ID card will ensure easy access to cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals. For children under 18 years, enrollment will be done under the head of the family.

4) The scheme is completely free for BPL families, while a nominal fee of Rs. 100/- will be charged per member of APL families as an annual enrolment fee.

5) The coverage includes inpatient treatment at both private and public empanelled hospitals, offering a maximum benefit limit of Rs. 2.00 lakh per individual member each year. This coverage is applicable both within Assam and outside the state and includes 438 procedures for various serious conditions such as:
