Types of Renewable Energy Sources

Renewable energy can be defined initially as any energy source that is derived directly or indirectly from solar energy. In the broadest sense, however, almost all the energy we use today, including fossil fuels, can be considered a form of solar energy.

The most familiar forms of energy, such as wood, oil, gas, and coal, are embodied forms of solar energy gathered, stored, and transformed by natural processes.

Types of renewable energy sources are:

  1. Biomass
  2. Wood and wood waste
  3. Municipal solid waste
  4. Landfill gas and biogas
  5. Ethanol
  6. Biodiesel
  7. Hydropower
  8. Geothermal
  9. Wind
  10. Solar

Renewable energy uses energy sources that are continually replenished by nature—the sun, the wind, water, the
Earth’s heat, and plants. Renewable energy technologies turn these fuels into usable forms of energy—most often electricity, but also heat, chemicals, or mechanical power.
